Collection Instructions

Refer to Venipuncture Protocol for serum sample. The blood draw is usually done at the end of the collection when the patient returns the 24 hour urine specimen.

Obtain a 24-hour urine container. Label clearly with patients name.

Patient should empty bladder completely into the toilet after getting up the first morning. Record time and date on container.

All subsequent urine specimens should be poured into the 24-hour urine container INCLUDING THE FIRST SPECIMEN COLLECTED AFTER GETTING UP IN THE FOLLOWING DAY. Record time and date on container.

Any clean container may be used to pour the specimen into the 24-hour container.

REFRIGERATE the 24-hour urine collection container until collection is complete. Bring to the laboratory as soon after collection as possible.
