Special Handling

  1. Draw blood sample two hours after patient has consumed a meal containing approximately 100 grams of carbohydrates.

  2. Example of a 100-gram carbohydrate test meal:

    1. Orange Juice - 8 oz.

    2. Cornflakes - 3/4 cup

    3. Milk - 4 oz.

    4. Bread, toasted - 2 slices

    5. Butter - as desired

    6. Jelly - 1 tbsp.

    7. Sugar - 2 tsp.

    8. Coffee or Tea

  3. If patient is to have test conducted by SVMC Laboratory, patient may eat meal at home or purchase test meal at SVMC coffee shop. The patient should notify lab of time of test meal so sample can be collected at proper time.
