Collection Instructions
CERVIX/VAGINAL:
-
Use a speculum without lubricants during specimen collection.

For cervix, wipe cervix clean of vaginal secretions and mucus.

Gently compress cervix with blades of speculum; insert swab and rotate to obtain exudate from endocervical glands.

For vaginal sampling, collect secretions from the mucosa high in the vaginal canal.

Return swab to Culturette sleeve; crush ample of transport media and push cap down gently to assure that swab is saturated with medium at bottom of tube.
RECTAL SWABS:

Pass the tip of the swab approximately 1 inch beyond the anal sphincter.

Carefully rotate the swab to sample anal crypts and withdraw.

Return swab to Culturette sleeve; crush ampule of transport media and push cap down gently to assure that swab is saturated with medium at bottom of tube.
NEONATAL SPECIMENS:

Samples may be submitted from various sources (e.g., placenta, axilla, ear etc.)

Collect sample(s) as appropriate; use separate swab for each specimen.

Return swab to Culturette sleeve; crush ampule of transport media and push cap down gently to assure that swab is saturated with medium at bottom of tube.
