Important Note

This test is for PREVIOUSLY CONFIRMED Salmonella or Shigella cases.

If patient has not been previously diagnosed with a Salmonella or Shigella infection, order a Stool Culture (SC).

Specimen Collection Instructions

Stool   Two feces-laden swabs, rectal swabs, or fresh stool (<2 hours old) placed in a Cary-Blair transport tube. Deliver to Laboratory immediately.

Collection Instructions

  1. Insert a swab into the middle of freshly passed feces, place swab one-third of the way down into a Cary-Blair transport tube and break off remaining swab stick. Repeat with second swab. Screw the cap back on the Cary-Blair tube.

  2. For rectal swabs, pass the tip of an Aerobic Transport swab approximately one (1) inch beyond the anal sphincter. Carefully rotate the swab to sample the anal crypts, and withdraw the swab.

  3. Collect multiple specimens at least one day apart since organisms may be shed intermittently
