Do not submit specimen in Cary-Blair Media. Stool must be <1 hour old. Avoid contamination with urine.

Collection Instructions

  1. Collect stool sample in clean, dry container. Deliver to lab within 1 hour.

  2. If rectal swab must be used to collect specimen DIRECT SMEAR SHOULD BE MADE IMMEDIATELY after specimen collection.

  3. Pass the tip of the sterile swab approximately 1 inch beyond the anal sphincter.

  4. Gently rotate the swab to sample the anal crypts, then withdraw swab.

  5. Roll the swab over a microscope slide, making a thin area about the size of a quarter in the center of the slide. ALLOW SLIDE TO DRY BEFORE placing in slide holder.
